What makes maternity photos so important?
Pregnancy is one of the most special times in a woman’s life & it goes by so quickly…
There's a moment, usually somewhere around 32 weeks, when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and you think: I actually look like a mum.
Not the mum you imagined when you were younger. Not the polished version. The real one. Round and tired and absolutely glowing, even if you can't quite see it yet.
And then you turn away from the mirror, because somehow, despite everything your body is doing, you don't quite feel ready for the camera.
I hear this from almost every woman who comes in for a maternity session. She's spent months watching her body change in ways she didn't expect. She feels a bit self-conscious. She keeps thinking she'll feel more ready, or look more like herself, or find the right time.
There is no right time. There's just now.
What she'll thank you for
I've photographed hundreds of pregnant mums in my studio, and I can tell you this honestly: not one of them has ever walked out wishing they hadn't done it.
What I hear instead, usually at the ordering session when they're seeing the images for the first time, is something like "I didn't realise I looked like that."
Not in a bad way. In the way you look when someone photographs you the way you actually are, rather than the way you imagine you look.
Your baby will ask you one day what you looked like when they were inside you. You'll want to be able to show them. Not describe it. Show them.
What a maternity session at über photography actually looks like
You'll arrive and we'll have a quick chat before I pick up the camera. There's no rushing. There's no awkward posing or telling you to stand a certain way and smile. I work with how you're feeling on the day, whether that's soft and still or a bit more playful.
Sessions run around 30 to 45 minutes. I'll guide you through it, but gently. You won't feel like you're performing.
If you want your partner there, brilliant. If you want to bring your toddler or your dog, also brilliant. Some of my favourite maternity images have a two-year-old pressed up against a bump, completely unaware of how perfect the moment is.
The timing
I recommend booking between 32 and 34 weeks. You're showing beautifully by then, and you're still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the session. If you're a little further along, don't panic. Get in touch and we'll work with where you are.
Once the baby arrives, everything moves fast and the window for maternity photos is gone. Book now, while you still have the bump. You can always plan a newborn session for a few weeks after.
The honest bit
Pregnancy goes faster than anyone tells you it will. The bump that feels so enormous right now will be gone before you've had a chance to really look at it. These photos aren't about having perfect images for Instagram. They're about having something real to hold onto, something to show your child one day when they ask.
If you're ready to book, you can grab a time on my calendar below. If you've got questions first, just reply to this email or send me a message on 0421 577 579. I'm easy to reach and very happy to chat it through.
“May you always know little one, that you were wished for, longed for, prayed for, and will be forever loved.”
“A new baby is like the beginning of all things- wonder, hope, a dream or possibilities….”
“The most magical day of my life was the day I became a mother”
“You will never have this day with your children again. Tomorrow, they will be a little older than they were today. This day is a gift. Just breathe, notice, study their faces & little feet. Pay attention. Relish the charms o the present. Enjoy today. It will be over before you know it.”
