Kids Modelling Portfolio Photography in Sydney


Your child has been scouted. Or they're already signed and the images are two years out of date. Or you've been thinking about approaching an agency and you're not sure where to start.

Either way, the first thing you'll be asked for is a portfolio.

Not nice photos of your kid. A portfolio. Agencies are looking for particular things: clean headshots, natural expressions, personality that comes through and images that show range. That's what these sessions are built around.

I've shot kids modelling portfolios for Sydney agencies and I know what they need to see. Every image is shot to a portfolio brief, so an agency can properly assess your child and start putting them forward for work.

Baby and toddler modelling portfolios

Most studios won't photograph a model under four. I start at six months, as soon as they can sit up.

Babies and toddlers get work constantly. Catalogue, advertising, packaging. If your baby has been noticed, or you've been asked to send images through, a baby modelling portfolio needs to show a happy, relaxed child across a range of looks. Same for a toddler modelling portfolio. Sydney agencies see a lot of stiff, over directed photos of small children and those kids don't get booked.

I photograph babies and toddlers every week. I know how long they'll last, when to stop and how to get a real smile rather than a performed one.

The studio is at Gordon, five minutes from the station with council parking right there. Most portfolio shoots in Sydney happen in the city or the inner west, which is a long drive with a small child who needs to arrive in a good mood.

These are shot on a clean, simple backdrop. No props, no styling, nothing competing with your child's face, which is exactly what an agency wants to see.

What to expect


The session runs for 45 minute at my Gordon studio on Sydney's North Shore. We'll work through two to three outfit changes, and I'll guide you on what to bring and how to style each look before you arrive so nothing is left to chance on the day.

I work with children every single day. From babies who've just found their sitting balance to teenagers with strong opinions about everything. Getting natural, genuine expressions out of kids in front of a camera is what I do, and a relaxed child always photographs better than a performing one.

After your session, you can go grab a coffee for around 15mins and then you come back to select your final images, with two retouched high-resolution files included, and additional images available if you want more.

  • Clean, well lit headshots where you can see the face properly. Natural expressions rather than posed smiles. Enough range across outfits and moods that they can picture your child in different jobs. Agencies are assessing whether your child is castable, not whether the photos are pretty.


  • Yes, and there's more work for them than most parents realise. Catalogue, advertising and packaging shoots all use babies and toddlers. I photograph from around six months, as soon as they can sit up on their own.


  • Mine is $199 per child, which covers a 45 minute session, two to three outfit changes and two retouched high resolution files. Additional images are $75 each. Prices around Sydney range from around $99 at high volume studios up to several hundred at city portfolio studios.


  • From about six months, once they're sitting up unassisted. There's no upper limit. I photograph teenagers regularly and a lot of them are updating a portfolio they first shot years ago.

  • Two or three. I'll go through the options with you before your session so you're not packing the whole wardrobe. Simple, well fitting clothes in plain colours work best. Busy patterns and logos date quickly and agencies don't love them.

  • You choose your images on the same day as your session. Retouched files come through within 48 hours. If you're on a deadline for an agency submission, tell me when you book and I'll make sure they're ready in time.

  • Most agencies will look at a clear phone snapshot to decide whether they're interested. Once they are, they'll want proper portfolio images. So you don't need professional photos to get in the door, but you will need them to get put forward for jobs.
